Elder Care Emotional Abuse and Invisible Pain
Elder care emotional abuse doesn’t leave telltale bruises or broken bones, but it’s just as debilitating as physical abuse – perhaps, more so.
Nursing home patients may already feel estranged or abandoned simply by their situation of being dependent on multiple care takers, often strangers. Nursing home staffing has a high turnover and a friendly face or a kind hand may be replaced too frequently causing further confusion and fear.
Watch for personality changes as nursing home patients could feel too threatened to speak out or not be able to speak out.
Nursing home patients with some to severe dementia have a diminished ability to fight back or report the emotional abuse. For patients with moderate to severe dementia, even though they won’t recognize the source of their agitation, they are still negatively impacted by it.
Emotional abuse causes mental distress by humiliation, intimidation, and can range from name calling, the silent treatment, isolation, and threats. Emotional abuse may also include treating the patient like a child or an unwanted pet.
If your loved one has been found to be emotionally abused while in a nursing home, you could fight back with an elder care abuse lawsuit. Let’s find out what’s going on and how you can help.
